What is organic food?<\/h3>

Organic foods, also known as \u201cbiological\u201d or \u201corganic,\u201d are those produced through organic farming and certified to ensure they meet the standards of this production system. These standards prohibit the use of synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are also not permitted.<\/strong> In organic livestock farming, the preventive use of antibiotics is prohibited\u2014a practice that should generally be avoided to prevent the serious health problems caused by the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. <\/p>

There are many reasons to choose organic produce; we often choose it for its flavor<\/strong>, but it is also the most recommended option for a healthy diet<\/strong>. In addition to being free of pesticide residues, organic products tend to have a number of other beneficial nutritional properties<\/strong> that stem from the production system. <\/p>

This has been demonstrated in numerous scientific studies. Health authorities are aware of the health benefits of organic foods, which is why the Healthy Eating and Organic Production Program<\/strong> was launched in school cafeterias<\/strong> in Asturias. This program addresses the need to improve children\u2019s diets by enhancing the nutritional balance of school meals and incorporating educational elements to foster healthy eating habits, respect for the environment, and the philosophy of responsible and fair consumption\u2014all through raising awareness of the benefits of organic farming and its gradual incorporation into school cafeterias.<\/p>

Furthermore, organic production standards set the benchmark for animal welfare<\/strong>, providing animals with housing conditions that allow them to behave naturally.<\/p>

Organic farming contributes to rural development<\/strong> because it is a production system more closely tied to the land and serves as an alternative for sustaining small-scale farming in rural areas.<\/p>

Organic production standards promote short supply chains to make food systems more sustainable<\/strong>.<\/p>

Who oversees organic production?<\/h3>

For a food product to be considered organic, it must have been produced in accordance with strict organic production standards and be certified by a control and certification body. COPAE oversees the various registered operators at all stages of production, processing, and marketing of organic products. COPAE inspectors periodically conduct thorough checks through inspections and audits of registered operators. All operators are inspected at least once a year, and unannounced inspections are also conducted. These controls include taking samples of the various products, which are sent to accredited laboratories to ensure the complete absence of residues of prohibited substances, such as pesticides, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics, unauthorized additives, etc. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Some stores sell organic products in bulk in smaller quantities; to do so, they must be registered with COPAE\u2019s Retailers Registry in order to pass the mandatory inspections. <\/p>

These are recommended retail outlets, as they typically sell locally sourced or bulk products, using less plastic packaging. Check to see if your preferred store is listed and monitored by COPAE.
